To Live with Passion

I have been doing a lot of thinking these past days…well weeks/months. Lately a single phrase has come to mind over and over.

Passion. I want to have passion. I want to have a passion. To experience passion….to be passionate. To be full of passion.

1.

any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling, as love or hate.

2.

strong amorous feeling or desire; love; ardor.

3.

strong sexual desire; lust.

4.

an instance or experience of strong love or sexual desire.

5.

a person toward whom one feels strong love or sexual desire.

6.

a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything:

a passion for music.

7.

the object of such a fondness or desire:

Accuracy became a passion with him.

8.

an outburst of strong emotion or feeling:

He suddenly broke into a passion of bitter words.

9.

violent anger.

10.

the state of being acted upon or affected by something external, especially something alien to one’s nature or one’s customarybehavior (contrasted with action ).

11.

(often initial capital letter) Theology.

  1. the sufferings of Christ on the cross or His sufferings subsequent tothe Last Supper.
  2. the narrative of Christ’s sufferings as recorded in the Gospels.

12.

Archaic. the sufferings of a martyr.

See, it means so much ….from intense love and desire for a person to hate and violent anger. It brings to mind Christ and the suffering that lead to his death on the cross. Some people have a passion for their job, I know many nurses that have a passion to care for people,  helping the ones who are most vulnerable. They are extraordinary people.

The act of creating something beautiful often stems from passion. I think of God and when He spoke the ‘simple words’;

Let There Be Light

Can you imagine???  darkness covered the entire existence then He Himself with the Son and Spirit spoke and there was suddenly illumination of the void. There was void no more, He dwelt in it and became part of the fabric of our world. Amazing.

When I travel I am drawn to nature, to the sky, the clouds, the ocean, sunrises and sunsets, flowers. Color amazes me, I love the minuteness of different shades of blue. There are too many to count! I stood at the window last week and observed a group of  starlings in their ballet of flight, I was in awe. How wonderful to live in a world so lovingly created by the Master Designer. Tonight I am sitting on my back porch, the air is sweet and cool. The crickets are singing their last song of summer and I am listening to music created by people, talented passionate people.

Sometimes I feel that the passion will just explode out of me, right through my chest. Kinda like the monster in Alien, only not deadly…or gross. I ride in my car and turn my music up and sing as loud as I want. If you pass me, you would probably laugh but I do not care. I dance with abandon when I am alone, but in public I am reserved and quiet. I have a secret me that dreams of escaping.

So yes, I am a passionate person. I remember Sonny telling the kids once that “Your Mom loves fiercely”. Yes I do. I love my people fiercely and passionately. But I desire more. The pastor at the church I have been visiting tells us to go and love people well. Not just our people but all people. So I need God to fill in the gap between my people and all people. He calls us to love ALL people fiercely. He did and does.

I struggle with fear and doubt but also unsureness of what my passion is. That is my giant question. I believe God gives us our purpose and passion. He tells us to love Him with all our heart mind and soul and to love our neighbor as ourselves. He gives us a purpose. But the how is different for each of us. How do we love him through our gifts and talents? So I am asking. I desire passion. I want to be filled with passion from God that overflows and pours out of me.
